IonQ (IONQ) has been named the primary quantum partner for a landmark national initiative in South Korea following a multi-million dollar government award to the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI). The funding, part of the “Quantum Computing Service and Utilization System Construction Project,” will establish the country’s first National Quantum Computing Center of Excellence.

KISTI will oversee the creation of a new quantum computing research and service platform intended to support a wide range of academic and enterprise applications. IonQ is expected to deliver a next-generation 100-qubit system under an anticipated contract with KISTI, providing advanced capabilities for quantum research and innovation. The system will be integrated into a private cloud, developed in partnership with Megazone Cloud, enabling remote access and hybrid quantum-classical computing environments.

This initiative is one of the most significant quantum investments in Asia to date and underscores South Korea’s ambition to become a global leader in quantum technology. The project will position IonQ’s hardware at the core of the nation’s infrastructure, expanding the company’s footprint across the Asia-Pacific region.

KISTI’s selection of IonQ builds on their existing relationship, which includes a recently signed memorandum of understanding to jointly advance South Korea’s role in the global quantum economy. IonQ has also previously engaged in regional partnerships with Hyundai, SKT, and leading universities such as Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University.
